Desert Marrakech Tours built this 4-day trek for...
Desert Marrakech Tours runs this 5-day trek for travelers who want more than a fast summit push — a real journey through remote Amazigh (Berber) villages in the High Atlas before finishing with a Mount Toubkal ascent. Instead of the direct 2-day route, this trek takes a wider loop through valleys most visitors never see, staying in village guesthouses and mountain refuges along the way.
You'll trek with one of our own local, certified mountain guides, who know these valleys personally, with mule support available to carry your gear across the route.
Duration: 5 days / 4 nights Starts / Ends: Marrakech to Marrakech Group type: Shared group tour or private tour available Trek difficulty: Moderate to challenging (multiple long trekking days plus a summit push) Best season: Late spring to autumn for standard trekking gear; winter requires crampons and an ice axe near the summit
How is this different from the 2-Day Mount Toubkal Trek? The 2-day trek is a direct route focused on reaching the summit as quickly as possible, while this 5-day trek takes a wider loop through remote Amazigh villages in the Azzaden Valley before finishing with the same Toubkal summit push.
Do I need previous trekking experience for this route? Previous mountain trekking experience isn't strictly required, but a good level of fitness is important, since this trek involves several consecutive days of walking at altitude, including the Toubkal summit push.
What are the village guesthouses like? Village guesthouses (gîtes) on this route offer simple, comfortable rooms or dormitory-style beds run by local Amazigh families, with home-cooked meals included.
Is the Mount Toubkal summit included in this trek? Yes, the summit push to Mount Toubkal (4,167m) is included as part of the itinerary on Day 4, following the village trekking days.
When is the best time to do this trek? Late spring through autumn (roughly April to October) offers the most straightforward conditions for standard trekking gear, while a winter attempt (December to March) requires snow and ice equipment due to conditions near the summit.
Can I do this trek as a private tour with just my group? Yes, the 5-Day Amazigh Villages & Mount Toubkal Trek is available as a private trek with your own guide, priced per group rather than per person.
Do I need to carry my own gear during the trek? Mule support is available across the route to carry your bags between villages and up to the refuge, so you can trek with just a daypack.
What should I pack for this trek? Sturdy hiking boots, warm layered clothing (temperatures drop significantly at altitude and at the refuge), a headlamp for the early summit start, sunscreen, and trekking poles if you use them.
Day 1: Marrakech → Imlil → Tacheddirt Morning pickup from your riad or hotel in Marrakech for the drive to Imlil. Begin trekking from Imlil, passing through the village of Aroumd and climbing over the Tizi n'Tamatert pass (around 2,900m) to reach Tacheddirt, a traditional Amazigh village. Overnight in a village guesthouse, with dinner included.
Day 2: Tacheddirt → Azzaden Valley A full trekking day through remote villages in the Azzaden Valley, walking terraced fields and traditional Amazigh settlements well off the main Toubkal trail. Overnight in a village guesthouse or mountain gîte, with dinner and a chance to see daily mountain life up close.
Day 3: Azzaden Valley → Toubkal Massif Continue trekking, crossing a high mountain pass toward the base of the Toubkal massif. The terrain becomes more alpine as you approach, with the scenery shifting from village valleys to bare rock and scree. Overnight at the Toubkal Refuge (or a nearby mountain hut), in preparation for the following day's summit push.
Day 4: Summit Push → Descent Toward Imlil An early wake-up (typically around 4–5 AM) for the ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167m, weather permitting, with panoramic views over the High Atlas range. Descend back through the Toubkal valley, passing the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, toward Imlil. Overnight in Imlil or a nearby village.
Day 5: Imlil → Marrakech A final, shorter walk around the Imlil valley in the morning before your driver-guide meets you for the return drive to Marrakech, arriving back at your riad or hotel in the afternoon.
