Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert from Marrakech

Planning a trip to Merzouga with Desert Marrakech Tours? The Sahara is a year-round destination, but knowing what each season actually feels like on the ground makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the dunes.

Spring (March–May) is generally considered the best all-around season. Daytime temperatures in the desert sit comfortably in the 20–30°C range, nights are cool but not harsh, and the light over the dunes at sunrise and sunset is especially clear. This is also peak booking season, so reserving your tour a couple of weeks ahead is worth doing.

Autumn (September–November) mirrors spring closely — warm days, cool nights, and good visibility — making it the other strong choice if you want comfortable conditions without extreme heat.

Summer (June–August) brings serious daytime heat, often 40°C or higher in the Erg Chebbi dunes. It’s not impossible to visit, but most of the sightseeing and camel trekking happens early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Nights, by contrast, stay warm and pleasant.

Winter (December–February) is cooler and quieter, with fewer crowds at the major stops like Aït Ben Haddou and Merzouga. The trade-off is cold desert nights — temperatures can drop close to freezing at the camp, so warm layers are essential even though the days themselves are usually mild and sunny.

Bottom line: if your travel dates are flexible, spring and autumn give you the easiest conditions. If you’re set on summer or winter, it’s still a great trip — you’ll just want to pack (and pace your days) accordingly.

This is general information, not a substitute for checking current conditions closer to your travel dates.
